Cold War: Russia/Soviet Union V.S. America
Cold War- state of tension and hostility between nations aligned with the U.S. on one side and the Soviet Union on the other that rarely led to direct armed conflict
The Cold War between the Soviet Union and the U.S. was basically a clash of ideas that caused tension between the two nations. America was for capitalism while the Soviet Union was for communism, each nation was threatened and thought the other was gaining too much power. Another reason for the tension between the two nations was the threat of nuclear weapons. Each nation had been in an arms race after WW2. At first only the U.S. had nuclear weapons but soon the Soviet Union had created some of their own. The idea that the other nation could send their missles at any time and destroy the other completely caused great fear and tension around the world. Everyone was terrified of a nuclear war breaking out and destroying the whole world. The Cold War lasted until 1991 when the Soviet Union fell and communism was pretty much abolished throughout eastern Europe. Today to keep the tension at ease between Russia and the U.S. many arms treaties and agreements have been made. For example there has been a reduction in the number of weapons each nation can have and a ban in the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater. However, until all nuclear weapons are gone they are still a threat to the world and all life on it.
