Overview of THe European Enlightenment
The Enlightenment, also called the Age of Reason, took place in the 1700s throughout Europe, mostly in the western countries. It was an age of intellectual, cultural, and philosophical social movements, that was spread most rapidly throughout Germany, Britain, and France. The main philosophes of the Enlightenment were Voltaire, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Baron de Montesquieu. Each philosophe has his own ideas about government and morals; some were contradictory to each other’s while others were similar. Each philosophe influenced modern day governments and societies around the world. They will probably continue to influence people for many centuries to come.
